EUROPEAN
European | |
Seckel | Also known as sugar pear. Small, sweet, flavorful, with somewhat astringent skin. Zone 5 but does well in a protected site for me. |
Warden Seckel | Early in testing. Hopefully just a larger Seckel. |
Bosc | Excellent flavor, good keeper, at the edge of its hardiness zone and ripening envelope, but worth it if you have a protected site. |
Comice | Famous gourmet pear. Marginal here and temperamental everywhere, probably not worth the trouble- maybe by the lake. |
Gourmet | Hardy, South Dakota introduction. Hardy Asian-European cross. Crisp like the former, rich flavor like the latter, ripens in September. Personal favorite. |
Little Goat Herd | German introduction, small, flavorful fruit. Like Seckel, but even better. |
Harrow Delight | Early in testing, developed in Harrow, Ontario for flavor in home orchards. Hopefully hardy and early enough ripening. |
Harrow Sweet | |
Dillon Hardy | |
d'Angou | Still testing, zone 5-8, but does well in Missoula. Excellent winter storage pear, ripening just barely in time. |
Luscious | |
Vermont Beauty | |
Patten | Hardy, Minnesota introduction, to replace the more tender Bartlett. |
Aurora | |
Flemish Beauty | |
Summer Crisp | Popular northern pear, like Gourmet, but ripens earlier. |
Bierschmidt | |
Summer Blood Birne (red flesh) | Early testing. Novelty European red-flesh fruit. Quality said to be good - not so with the poorly-stored one that I tried in Oregon. |
Sanguinola Summer Blood (red flesh) | |
Nova | |
